How Do You Care for Suede?

With a bit of regular care, your suede items can stay beautiful for many years. The sooner you remove stains, the better the result – and prevention is always easier than repair.

Light steam

Common leather care products such as leather creams and leather grease cannot be used on suede, nubuck, or similar materials. That’s why it’s very important to use care products specifically made for suede, in order to avoid further stains or damage.

Before Use

To protect suede from future stains and moisture, waterproofing is a key part of maintenance. Apply waterproofing spray in thin, even layers to create an optimal water- and dirt-repellent surface. Remember to let each layer dry completely before applying the next, and repeat the treatment regularly to maintain protection.

Products that benefit from waterproofing include suede boots and shoes, suede bags, and other suede items that are particularly exposed to moisture.

Small Stains

Since suede is an open and absorbent material, it is especially vulnerable to dirt and liquids. Start by regularly removing surface dirt using a soft suede brush. These are widely available. The most important thing is to find a brush suitable for your specific suede item, so you don’t damage the material with one that’s too harsh.

Always brush gently in the same direction to avoid damaging the delicate fibers. If the suede has been stained, you can dab the area with a slightly damp cloth – avoid rubbing, as this may cause the stain to penetrate deeper into the material.

Larger Stains

For tougher or larger stains, use a suede eraser or a specialized suede cleaner. Always test the product on an inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire surface. Refreshing Suede

If your suede looks flat or dull, you can refresh the fibers by gently holding the item over light steam and then brushing the surface with a suede brush. This process helps lift the nap and can remove light pressure marks and dust. Be cautious though – too much steam can damage suede, so keep exposure brief!

Storing Suede

As with many other leather products, you can extend the life of your suede item by storing it properly. Keep it dry and out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and moisture damage. Avoid plastic bags, as suede needs to breathe. Use cloth bags or breathable shoe boxes instead. You can insert shoe trees to help shoes keep their shape, and fill bags with tissue paper or a scarf to prevent them from collapsing. Suede jackets do best on wide hangers, and try not to place heavy items on top to avoid marks and pressure points.
